Yeah, this German surfs wayyyy better than you. While watching a few recent World Qualifying Series events, I found myself rooting for the lone German on tour, Marlon Lipke. Maybe it’s the fact that I’m of German descent, perhaps it’s the fact that my best friend is from Hamburg, or it could be that I spent eight months living in Munich, maybe it’s the great beer the country produces or the even finer women. Whatever my reason for falling into the German camp, I’m now on team Lipke. His goofyfoot attack, while impressive on it’s own, is even more impressive when you consider that the guy’s from Deutschland. Granted, he’s probably spent more time in Portugal than anywhere else since he started surfing, but impressiver never-the-less. Right now, he’s sitting at number 14 on the WQS, which means… if he is able to maintain his status, he’ll win a seat on next year’s World Tour. Ladys and gentlemen, I have found my new favorite underdog! With the WQS in its European leg right now, I’d say Marlon has homecourt advantage. He’s breezed through the first few rounds in the Sprite Rip Curl Pro, and is coming up again in heat 2 of round 3.
Keep tuned in tomorrow for an update, or check out the action yourself at: www.ripcurl.eu/?rcpro08_home_en
Go Marlon!
