Paddling speed and timing for a longboard

Think of how a long jumper runs towards the sand pit; big long strides which gradually speed up into faster and more urgent steps as he approaches the jump board. This is essentially how you want to approach paddling for a wave. The more paddling you do in the early stages, the less paddling you will have to do when the wave starts to get critical, and you can concentrate more on your pop up. How many times have you paddled hard for a wave, only to have it pass under you? The key is to start earlier than you thought, and paddle harder and faster than you though at those last critical moments.
