A preview of the Billabong Mundaka Pro – if it ever gets going

The Association of Surfing Professionals has produced a pretty cool promotional vid for the Billabong Mundaka Pro, which has been called off due to poor conditions. We hope it gets rolling tomorrow (cross-fingers) as the past two events have been totally fantastic, particularly Trestless 2008 for the Boost Mobile Pro. Anyway, this vid from the ASP features some great footage of Mundaka, when it's working, including its world-famous barrel. … [Read more...]

We made fun of Surfer and Surfing…

dailystoke_funny

We made fun of Surfer and Surfing mags a couple of weeks ago when they were running ads for the Academy-award winning Surfer, Dude movie starring Matthew McConakook. We can only picture the big debate that went on between their ad sales teams and editorial staff, fighting for the soul of surfers. Ad sales needs to make its numbers, and editorial believes that putting an ad for the Academy-aware winning Surfer, Dude would have Miki Dora rolling in his grave. Now, we at DailyStoke.com are able to … [Read more...]

My Favorite Place – Raglan, New Zealand Part 2

raglan-surf

From Auckland, I met some friends, and drove approximately 2 hours to Raglan, located on the west side of the north island. The surf was flat, but the vibe was good. We rolled into Raglan late, desperately searching for lodging, only to find the quaint "Raglan Backpackers" nestled between 2 bushes and a hobo. Although the surf was flat upon arrival, we knew it'd be good due to Internet forecasting. Two days later, it was epic...and it stayed epic for about 5 straight days. So epic, that even the … [Read more...]

Bustin’ Down the Door – Surfing Movie Review

Recently I had the pleasure of watching Bustin' Down the Door, directed by Jeremy Gosch. The underlying current in the movie is the story of the development of surfing - the sport - versus surfing - the pastime. Bustin' Down The Door documents the revolution in surfing that was brought on by Aussie and South African surfers in the mid-70s on Hawaii's North Shore. The film covers the early days in the winter of 1974, where surfers Shaun Tomson, Wayne 'Rabbit' Bartholomew, Ian Cairns, Mark Richards, … [Read more...]

Dispatch from Iceland – Monday

l-640-480-d6a69335-2b55-4f16-a373-5b39c0455f03.jpeg

Day 2 in Iceland, and I finally got in the water. My local surf buddy Georg keyed me into a head high to overhead right hand reef break, that was a long ride through mountain roads, farm fields and a little off roading on a semipaved gravel pathway. The tide was draining as we arrived, leaving much of the rock reef exposed and forcing us to take a long death defying walk over some of the most slippery rocks and seaweed on the planet. When we finally reached the water, it was much warmer than I expected. … [Read more...]

A Great Surf Morning in the South

I have had the pleasure to have met one of the pro surfers in Mexico. She just happens to live in my town and is such a tight girl. Some mornings, before we both had to work at 8:30, we would take a trip to the neighboring beaches that usually have better, uncrowded surf. One beautiful, sunny morning, we decided to strap the surfboards to the front of her A.T.V and ride to the nearest beach. Hair flying in the wind, in our swimsuit tops and shorts, we drove over puddles the size of little rivers … [Read more...]

Under the Sun – Surfing movie review

Under the Sun, directed by Cyrus Sutton, is a one-of-a-kind surfing flick that centers on the distinctions between Byron Bay and the Gold Coast in Australia (as well as the not-so-distinct features.) The Gold Coast is a sort of photocopy of SoCal and is the hub of the Association of Surfing Professionals with all that comes along with it. Byron Bay, only an hour south down the coast, is the soul surfer headquarters of Australia. The movie tells the story of the clash (of sorts) between these two … [Read more...]
