Gatorade Surf Classic

Tune in this morning for the first day of action at this year’s Gatorade Surf Classic, live from Praia da Saudade, Sao Francisco do Sul, Santa Catarina, Brazil (how’s that for a mouthful?), running September 5th – 7th.  It’s a 3 star WQS event, down from 4 stars last year (for some reason unbeknownst to me).  The heat sheet for the event reads like a virtual database of Brazilian pro surfers, with some current WQS contenders, some past World Tour warriors, and other big names in Brazilian surfing.  I’m personally pulling for the Carioca, Leandro Bastos, since I bought one of his personal boards in Brazil two years back.  The fin alignment on the board caused a high pitched noise while I surfed that made me the center of attention for the short lifespan of that potato chip board.  Anywho… with the way the Brazilians have been dominating many recent WQS events, the 91 Brazilians in this event should put on quite a show over the next three days.  Oh yeah, and there’s also a token Uruguayan and one Australian, just to keep things interesting.
