Day 5 capped off what many describe as one of the best, highest performance contests ever. In a stunning, last minute push, Kelly Slater, rebounding from a combo situation, topped Taj Burrow’s 18.63 point total, with a 18.97. And, Kelly had throwaway waves of 8.37 and 8.17. Just 10 minutes into the final, it looked like Taj had the win tied up, but Slater pulled a Slater, and Taj never got another wave. How did we get to this final? Let’s take a step back. The day started with Heitor Alves ousting fellow Rookie, Jay Thompson in the last heat of Round 4. Quarterfinal heat 1 found Bede Durbidge finally putting a stop to Dane Reynolds previously unstoppable performance. Quarterfinal heat 2 saw Kelly Slater take down close friend and apprentice, Bobby Martinez. Quarterfinal heat 3 followed, with my favorite young Fronchie, Jeremy Flores taking out current World Champ Mick Fanning. Quarterfinal heat 4 saw Taj Burrow bitch-slap Heitor Alves, where he dominated over the Brazilian rookie with over a 12 point difference. Semifinal heat 1 pitted Kelly Slater against Bede Durbidge. Bede finally had the chance to knock Kelly’s ratings lead down by a few hundred points, but Slater again pulled a Slater on Bede, and narrowly slipped by Bede to the final. Semifinal heat 2 had Taj Burrow face off against Jeremy Flores. Though Jeremy posted big scores and put in a stunning performance, it wasn’t enough to top Taj.
