Estoril Coast Pro – Friday recap

Round 3 wrapped up on Friday, and we’ll see the beginning of Round 4 this morning at the 6 Star WQS Estoril Coast Pro.  The day was marked by big wins and big upsets, with some of the top 15 and top 100 hopefuls bowing out too early to have a chance to improve on their WQS rankings.  Those that made it through Round 3 are keeping their hopes alive for one last jump in the rankings before the ultra challenging Hawaiian leg of the tour.

Friday’s big winners included Adam Melling (AUS) – WQS number 35; Hugo Savalli (REU) – WQS number 63; Tiago Pires (PRT) – WQS number 15 and World Tour number 31; Mike Losness (USA) – WQS number 61; Eric Rebiere (FRA) – WQS number 94; Kekoa Bacalso (HAW) – WQS number 22; Christophe Allary (REU); Jean Da Silva (BRA) – WQS number 85; Gavin Gillette (HAW); Travis Logie (ZAF) – WQS number 58 and World Tour number 41;  Tonino Benson (HAW) - WQS number 88; Owen Wright (AUS); Dion Atkinson (AUS) – WQS number 38; Eneko Acero (EUK) – WQS number 75; Marlon Lipke (DEU) – WQS number 12; Greg Emslie (ZAF) – WQS number 8; Shaun Gossmann (AUS) – WQS number 21; Nathaniel Curran (USA) – WQS number 1; Blake Thornton (AUS) - WQS number 74; Shaun Cansdell (AUS) – WQS number 25; Gabe Kling (USA) – WQS number 9; Tanner Gudauskas (USA) – WQS number 62; Leigh Sedley (AUS) – WQS number 33; and Jay Thompson (AUS) – WQS number 52 and World Tour number 32.  Guys like Tiago Pires, Marlon Lipke, Nathaniel Curran, Greg Emslie and Gabe Kling will fight through Round 4 to hold onto their slots in the top 15, while the rest of those heading into Round 4 will be battling to crack into the top 15.

Some of the top seeds saw their luck run out in Round 3.  Among the early exiters were Bobby Hansen (NZL) – WQS number 65; Nic Muscroft (AUS) – WQS number 10; Phil MacDonald (AUS) – WQS number 10; Jonathan Gonzalez (CNY) – WQS number 43; Stuart Kennedy (AUS) – WQS number 100; Yadin Nicol (AUS) – WQS number 16; Damien Fahrenfort (ZAF) – WQS number 76; Sunny Garcia (HAW) – WQS number 27; Rodrigo Dornelles (BRA) – WQS number 34; Drew Courtney (AUS) – WQS number 4; Clint Kimmins (AUS) – WQS number 90; Romain Laulhe (FRA) – WQS number 83; and Glenn Hall (IRE) – WQS number 41.  Fortunately, for these guys all is not lost as the Hawaiian leg of the tour, with its back to back 6-Star Prime events will have plenty of points on offer for any of these guys who slip out of the top 15 or are still trying to make the cut.  Expect a big show in Hawaii from multi-year Triple Crown winner, Sunny Garcia.

Tune in this morning for all the action as Round 4 begins with local boy, Tiago Pires facing off against Adam Melling (AUS) and Kekoa Bacalso (HAW).
