Donavon Frankenreiter makes his editorial debut in the November issue of Surfer magazine. Where I am, yeah, it's getting colder, but it sure as shiz ain't November. Here's what Donavon had to serve up, surfers!
First, and actually last, I gotta point out the cool Rip Curl H-Bomb ads that showed up, seen on the back cover of the November issue. We are so very stoked to be testing one out when the time comes. As in, the real November.
- There's a positively freaky ad for Nat Young by O'Neill a couple of pages in. Psycho wetsuit, yes. But the O'Neill guys need some photoshop help!
- Neat spread of Frankenreiterererer with his quiver – and dude's got a pretty big quiver of similar boards and shapes. (In our interview with Frankenreiter, he confirms he'll basically ride anything. Cool.)
- New Jersey surfer and artist Jay Alders does a thumb flip book thingy which, if you missed, is pretty damn cool. Look at the inside edge of the pages and flip away. It should be required in every edition of Surfer Magazine…Joel Patterson, are you listening?
More on Jay's work later. - Great way to show the table of contents. Yup, this is Donavon's issue. Based on his features inside, he had a cool time as guest editor.
- Doc Lausch throws in a nice ad. Donavon's a team rider.
- Shot of the perfect surfing day – one of the highlights, would leave our buddy Stevey pretty stoked – New Hampshire bombs going off.
- Aussie Dogs ads. Umm. Yes indeed. Do not pass go, go directly to page 87. These ads are very, very good with what I imagine to be hot Australian wahines.
- Donavon (again!) provides a snapshot of the surfers he “idolizes and looks up to.” Great shots of Tom Curren, Slater in the tube, Mark Occhilupo, Bruce Irons in the tube, and Andy Irons.
- Very cool photostory of the guys surfing at Trestles, at night. Check it out.
- Best article for regular surfers, courtesy of Donavon himself: Building a rideable quiver. Great insight: 1) ride a single fin, 2) have a creative shaper, 3) hit up garage sales, 4) get boards for all conditions and 5) more boards means more fun. Read up, kids!
It was a great issue.
