This week kicks off the beginning of the first contest in the 2008 Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, The 2008 Reef Hawaiian Pro.
The Triple Crown of Surfing is considered by most Hawaiians and many outside of Hawaii to be the premier professional surfing contest series on the planet. It’s no secret that the north shore of Oahu is considered the ultimate testing ground of a surfer’s ability, seen as a place that truly separates the men from the boys (and women from the girls). This three contest series pits all of the world’s best surfers and star hopefuls against one another in three different venues in Hawaii, with the top point winner at the end of the three events being crowned the Triple Crown Champion. For Hawaiians, winning the Triple Crown is as important as winning a world title, for non-Hawaiians, winning the Triple Crown is proof of a surfer’s outstanding abilities in the most challenging conditions on the planet.
The men’s Triple Crown is a combination of two WQS events and one World Tour event. The 6 Star Prime WQS Reef Hawaiian Pro runs at Haleiwa this week in high performance reef-like beachbreak conditions. This is followed by the 6 Star Prime WQS O’Neill World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach from November 24th to December 6th. Then, the final event, the last stop on the ASP World Tour, the Billabong Pipeline Masters runs from December 8th to December 20th.
The women’s Triple Crown is a combination of one WQS event and two World Tour events. Beginning with the 6 Star Women’s WQS Reef Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa, starting this week, then the ASP Women’s World Tour Roxy Pro at Sunset Beach, which runs alongside the men’s O’Neill World Cup of Surfing, and wrapping up with the ASP Women’s World Tour Billabong Pro Maui, held at Honolua Bay in Maui, concurrently with the men’s Pipeline Masters.
