The 6 Star Prime WQS Reef Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa kicked off an uneventful first day on Wednesday, with the men’s event calling a lay day due to lack of swell. The women’s event went on standby for a possible late start, but was ultimately called off since the swell failed to show by the early afternoon. Packs of surfers were visible at all the usual spots just before sunset, picking off a few one off lines as the swell began to show. With sizable surf filling in throughout the day on Thursday, we are almost certain to see an official start to either the men’s or women’s event. The swell should stick around through Saturday, allowing for at least of few full days of competition.
When the Reef, the first event in the Van’s Triple Crown of Surfing actually commences competition, expect big things from the local boys and girls, who are frothing to take down some of the world’s best in what is largely a Hawaiian dominated playing field. With six to seven foot swell predicted for Thursday, we should get a nice opening round preview.
Tune in this morning to the event website for all the action.
