The Reef Hawaiian Pro went live at Haleiwa on Thursday in solid, well-overhead right hand bowls. The large surf made for some amazing performances, with the best of Hawaii and the rest of the world coming out to prove themselves in the thumping rights.
Standouts on Thursday included former World Mark Occhilupo (AUS), who came out of retirement to dominate both of his heats and Sebastien “Sea Bass” Zietz (HAW), who also ran circles around his fellow competitors, with two near perfect scores in his Round 2 heat. Also excelling in their heats were Hank Gaskell (HAW); Gavin Gillette (HAW); Joel Centeio (HAW); Willian Cardoso (BRA); Mike Losness (USA); Nathan Hedge (AUS); Glen Hall (IRE); Marcelo Trekinho (BRA); Mark Matthews (AUS) and Flynn Novak (HAW), among others.
Surprise exits on Thursday included World Tour surfer, Ben Bourgeois (USA), local Hawaiians and Xcel Pro finalists, Kamalei Alexander and Danny Fuller; local hero, Bruce Irons, who failed to back up a 9.27; Jason Shibata (HAW); and former World Tour surfer, Shane Beschen (USA). Also bowing out early were local legend, Derek Ho (HAW); Granger Larsen (HAW); Che Stang (USA); Danilo Costa (BRA); Torrey Meister (HAW); Bruno Santos (BRA); Tanner Gudauskas (USA) and Marcus Hickman, among others.
With the sizable swell expected to stick around through Friday, we can expect an early start to either the men’s or women’s event. Tune in to the event website this morning for an 8:00 am start, to catch all the action live.
