With cleaned up small but rippable conditions Thursday morning and swell expected to build throughout the day, the decision was made early this morning to wrap up the women’s portion of the 2008 Reef Hawaiian Pro, before continuing on with final rounds of the men’s event. This event is the last stop on the women’s WQS and the first stop of the three women’s events in the 2008 Van’s Triple Crown of Surfing. The young and talented Hawaiian, Carissa Moore took a convincing win this morning when she dominated her four-surfer final. Runner-up went to seven time World Champ, Layne Beachley (AUS). Third went to Laura Enever (AUS) and fourth place went to another talented young Hawaiian, Coco Ho.
On her way to victory, Carissa Moore went from trials to the final, surfing every round. She took down a pack of young Hawaiians, Malia Manuel, Layla Hurst, Monica Byrne Wickey, Gabi Cope, and Nage Melamed in a winner takes all trial Round; Bethany Hamilton (Haw), Lee AnnCurren (FRA), Suelen Naraisa (BRA), Francisca Santos (PRT) and Mizuki Hagiwara (JPN) in Round 1; Jacqueline Silva (BRA), Rosanne Hodge (ZAF) and Lee Ann Curren (FRA) in Round 2; Rosanne Hodge (ZAF), Alana Blanchard (HAW) and Silvana Lima (BRA) in the Quarterfinals; and Layne Beachley (AUS), Rebecca Woods (AUS) and Rosanne Hodge (ZAF) in the Semifinals. To make things even more amazing, Carissa dominated every one of her heats, taking first place in each heat from trials to the final. The future is bright for young Carissa.
While the 2008 WQS has now drawn to a close, there are two Women’s World Tour events to go, keeping us busy with plenty of action over the next month, the Roxy Pro at Sunset and the Billabong Pro at Honolua Bay.
Tune in to dailystoke.com this weekend for a complete Women’s WQS wrapup, and log on to the Reef Hawaiian Pro website for a full recap, photos, videos and heat sheets. See you at Sunset.
