I just wanted to pass on some info to the San Diego surfers out there, both tidbits offering us surfers to reduce our impact on the environment – always a great cause, especially close to us, as it affects our blue sanctuary.
The City of San Diego and three businesses are now accepting used, broken, or unwanted surfboards for recycling, and can be dropped off at the Miramar Recycling Center (not the landfill) without a fee. Usable rides will be donated, and unusable ones will be ground up and used in concrete as a filler. I think this is a great step in the right direction for the City of San Diego’s environmental policies, and a good sign of more change to come, we hope.
In my ever-informative Surfrider SD Newsletter, they also provided a link to a board trading online hub, where all boardriders can buy and sell other user’s boards on the website, instead of having them end up in a landfill. The site’s at Re-Rip, created by two North County surfer girls, and also features ads for environmentally friendly board companies.
This is definitely an improvement by the City of San Diego and its residents, and I’m proud to call San Diego my home. Next step: getting rid of plastic bags!
