Making a coffee table out of a surfboard

“Get your feet off the coffee table!”

I can hear my mother's voice even today. Back in the day my family's coffee table was made of fake wood laminate. It was mostly certainly not a piece of art and did not get me stoked. But if you want a coffee table that'll get you stoked and is a piece of art, look no further than the Wave Table by the Endless Wave, a Rhode Island-based company.

The Endless Wave has been producing coffee tables for the past two years, initially starting as an idea from company founder, Ron DiMauro, who wanted to bring the stoke home. Pictured here, the surfboard tables come in two shapes – a fish shape called the Malibu, and a longboard shape called the Waikiki. The shapes are shrunk down and modified so that they will actually work as coffee tables. That said, the board that is mounted on the table is the real deal. Says DiMauro: “We have a surfboard manufacturing company in California that manufactures our the surfboards. But we've given away the mini-boards at competitions, too!” Surfers have also been looking to Endless Wave for the base of the table alone so that they can mount their own boards.

Coming in at around $1,650 plus shipping, the surfboard tables are not cheap. But nor are you likely to be able to make one yourself that looks decent and is workable. Indeed, DiMauro shared some secrets of the wave table craft that make his tables solid. For example, drinks will not slide off the edges (and there's not even surf wax involved!)

The tables have owned by surfers and non-surfers alike. DiMauro says that his most famous client is celebrity surfer and all-around nice guy, Matthew McConaughey, who ordered a table for his office. Says DiMauro: “I'm told he liked it so much, he skipped putting in his office and brought it home!”

No word yet on whether McConaughey rests his feet on the table. Stay tuned!

The Endless Wave has been producing high-end items like surfboard coffee tables and has recently come out with a wax scraper that works. More on the Wax Buddy scraper later.
