The penultimate event of the ASP Women’s World Tour wrapped up today at Sunset Beach on the North Shore of Oahu, with Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) taking both the win and the World Title. The conclusion of the Roxy also brings an end to the second event of three in the women’s 2008 Van’s Triple Crown of Surfing.
Steph Gilmore won the day and the title, but not without a fight from a very in form Silvana Lima (BRA), who came in a close 2nd place. Jessi Miley-Dyer (AUS) came in 3rd, and Nicola Atherton (AUS) came in 4th. Steph had the extra good fortune of having her top rivals for the title, Sofia Mulanovich (PER) and Layne Beachley (AUS) go down in the Quarterfinals and Semifinals respectively.
Steph’s road to glory saw her top an otherwise all Hawaiian heat in the Quarterfinals, comprised of Megan Abubo, Melanie Bartels and Coco Ho. She then finished second to eventual contest runner-up, Silvana Lima in the Semifinals, before turning the tables in the finals. Silvana’s path to runner-up saw her top an otherwise all Aussie heat in the Quarterfinals, comprised of Serena Brooke, Claire Bevilacqua and Sam Cornish. She followed this up with a convincing Semifinal win over Steph Gilmore, Megan Abubo and Serena Brooke.
With the title decided at Sunset, the Honolua Bay event will be somewhat anticlimactic, though Honolua never fails to entertain. Tune in to the Triple Crown website next week to catch the start of the Billabong Pro at Honolua Bay. See you in Maui.
