While the boys are having their fun at Pipeline with the Billabong Pipeline Masters, the ladies will be facing off at the 2008 Billabong Pro Maui. This marks the 10th anniversary of the contest being held at Honolua Bay on Maui’s northwest point. This is the final event of the 2008 Women’s World Tour and the last of three events in this year’s Van’s Triple Crown of Surfing.
While the World Title contest was settled at the Roxy Pro at Sunset Beach last week, crowning Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) for a second consecutive year, the race for second place is still on. By the close of the Billabong event, we’ll be crowning a Triple Crown champion and we’ll establish the final make up of the 2009 Women’s World Tour. We can expect Steph Gilmore to try to pull a repeat performance of her win at the event last year, while those on the cusp of requalification fight to maintain their spot on the 2009 tour.
If the past 9 years are any indication of who we should expect to see on the winner’s podium, it might be good to focus on an Aussie victory, since they have dominated the event since its beginning. Previous Honolua Bay event winners were:
2007 Stephanie Gilmore (AUS)
2006 Jessi Miley-Dyer (AUS)
2005 Chelsea Georgeson (AUS)
2004 Chelsea Georgeson (AUS)
2003 Sam Cornish (AUS)
2002 Neridah Falconer (AUS)
2001 Neridah Falconer (AUS)
2000 Neridah Falconer (AUS)
1999 Trudy Todd (AUS)
With a fading northwest swell leaving sizable remnants on Monday and a new northwest swell expected to start filling in Tuesday, we should the event kick off sometime early this week. Tune in to the event website for updates and all the live action.
