Chris Ward – surfing better than ever

After an amazing campaign in the Billabong Pipeline Masters, where he scored an admirable second place finish to Kelly Slater, Chris Ward finished 2008 in 14th place, bettering his 17th place finish in 2007.  In a year that started out as anything but good for the talented San Clemente surfer, Chris managed to clean up his act and up his ranking on the World Tour.

After being arrested back in January for allegedly knocking out a few girls in a drunken bar fight, many though Chris was on the path to self destruction.  The surf media questioned whether the allegations could even lead to Wardo being dismissed from the Dream Tour.  Chris turned his lemons into lemonade, turning what could have been his worst year on tour, into his best.

Chris himself said that he’s now surfing the best he has since he was a teenager, and the results are showing that he is indeed.  With two 9ths, a 3rd and a 2nd place finish among his high finishes, if Chris can add a little more consistency to his contest repertoire, he will truly be a force to contend with in the years to come.  And, perhaps even more so, give the lack of interest and general indifference that seems to be plaguing several of the usual front-runners.  If Chris can keep his head clean in the off season, come the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast in February, he may put in a 2009 campaign that sees him finish in the top ten.
