1. Surfrider foundation membership – A great gift for any surfer and at a very reasonable cost.
2. Netflix membership – If you don’t already have one, get one. Aside from Hollywood’s biggest movies, it is a surf movie Mecca! They have more surf movies than I have seen anywhere else and it will keep you entertained while saving you a boat load of cash.
3. Hitachi Planer – This planer is hundreds less than the ones the pros use and it works great. It even looks the same! Definitely grab one while the price lasts and start shaping your own boards.
4. Gopro’s newest board mount surf camera – Gopro’s stuff is getting better and better each year and with their new fisheye lens and board mount options, I may finally break down and buy one this holiday season.
5. Firewire Direct Drive – You guys know how passionate I am about surfboard technology and with what is currently on the Market, a Firewire featuring their new Direct Drive suspension system definitely made my list of technology I want under my feet.
6. A New Pickle and wax supply - Although cheap, I never buy either of these for myself and always seem to need them. (Great stocking stuffers!)
Wax Tip: As for wax, call the manufacturer of your favorite brand(s) and see if they will sell you a case of wax. I do this every holiday season with a bunch of the boys and it usually lasts us till the following year.
7. Longboard skateboard (for all those wave-less summer days) – I’ve recently re-discovered skateboarding since giving it up as a teen. These days I am just more focused on smooth carving and surf training than ollies and kick-flips. These will really help your surfing and they make training a blast.
8. Web Accessible Cell Phone (i.e. – iPhone, Instinct, Blackberry, etc.). With every cell phone provider now offering web access via telephones, these little gadgets are a must for checking surf reports, cams, and of course, Dailystoke.com!
9. Mr. Slater’s new book…appropriately coming in on my list at #9! The reviews on this book seem to be favorable and I am always interested in hearing insight from the best of the best. Who knows, it could make you surf better.
10. New Spring suit –They are cheaper in the off season and you can usually get away with a pretty good deal on last year’s models. Personally, I would suggest Xcel’s 2mm front-zip, full-suit; by far the best suit I’ve ever owned.

Hi Courtney
We purchased your wave machine from Tich Paul’s Lifestyle Surf Shop in Muizenberg, South Africa – it’s awesome. Our son Cameron has to do a Grade 6 Science project : Exploring Electric Circuits and being a keen surfer wants to make a mini wave machine and lighthouse. The lighthouse seems okay to make – have found heaps of info online but we’re kinda stuck on how to go about making the wave machine. Could you give us some advice on what to buy (source of power, length of copper wire, any electrical parts we might need). I do not want him taking apart the wave machine to see how it works.
