Billabong Pro Maui – Finals recap

The Billabong Pro Maui finally drew to a close on Thursday on this 11th day of competition, opting for the newly designated backup location of Ho’okipa Beach on Maui’s north shore, over the main event site, Honolua Bay.  Ho’okipa provided rippable 3 foot waves for the final seven heats of the event.  Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) took down the competition, adding gravy to her already stellar run this season.

Surviving the Quarterfinals were seven time World Champ, Layne Beachley (AUS); 2007 and 2008 World Champ, Stephanie Gilmore (AUS); local Hawaiian, Melanie Bartels; and Silvana Lima (BRA).  The Semifinal Round saw the advance of Steph Gilmore and Melanie Bartels, showing Layne her final exit as a full time competitive surfer.  Steph Gilmore then dominated the Final, taking down Melanie Bartels 17.60 to 14.80.

The win gave Steph Gilmore her fifth win of eight events this season, as well as the Triple Crown title.  It also allowed her to finish more than 1500 points north of her nearest competitor, World runner-up, Silvana Lima.

Log on to the event website for photos, videos and heatsheets.  Dailystoke will run a complete update tomorrow, introducing your 2009 Women’s World Tour top 17.  See you next year.
