Hey, Remember Phillip Waters?

Does anybody remember this old poster shot from Surfing Magazine? It was Phillip Waters, and he was dubbed the original “super grom” by the media. This was before anyone knew who Dane Reynolds was or how good Jordy Smith surfed. Phillip Waters was coming up next behind the original “Momentum Generation” and grew up next to guys like Ben Bourgeois & the Hobgood brothers. The famous pull out poster launched his whole career, and he was quickly fully-sponsored, traveling around the world for WQS destinations. Phillip suffered from poor contest results, and a sponsor change kind of had him slipping off the scene completely. After a little shuffling around he went back with Billabong and had another short-lived pro career getting paid to basically do airs. Life was pretty good for Phil, but then his contract came up with Billabong, and they wanted to chop his salary in half. That’s when Phillip had finally had enough, and walked away completely. Eastern Surf Magazine recently caught up with the “Super Ghost” and put together a great interview you can read here.
