The 2009 Copa Movistar, presented by Rip Curl and Samsung kicks off tomorrow in San Bortolo, Lima, Peru. The 2 star World Qualifying Series event is the second stop on the men’s 2009 WQS, running from January 23rd to 25th.
San Bartolo features a consistent, rocky bottom beach break, allowing for both lefts and rights, depending on the conditions and prevailing swell direction. Just a short drive south of Lima, the event should draw a largely local and South American crowd. Since the Copa Movistar is only a 2 star event, it lacks the major ratings points that many of the top WQS surfers travel around the globe chasing. That said, we still may see a few stars, local or otherwise, turn out for the event.
A few days after the event wraps up, we’ll see the start to the women’s event, which runs from January 30th to February 1st. Including the women’s World Tour event later in the year, Peru will be hosting a total of 3 ASP pro level events this season.
We’ll provide an up to date seed list for the event as it becomes available. Tune in to the ASP World Tour website for updates, photos and more info on the Copa Movistar.
