After an incredible show put on by some of the most talented young surfers of today, top local Aussie talent, Owen Wright stopped all comers with a convincing victory in the finals.
Owen pulled out an 18.50 out of 20 possible points in his final heat, handily defeating event runner up, Miguel Pupo of Brazil. Owen entered competition in Round 3, where he absolutely dominated his heat with a 19.30 out of 20, topping fellow Aussies, Tim MacDonald and Ice Periera-Ryan, and Klee Strachan of South Africa. In Round 4, he again swept the field, this time winning over Americans, Dillon Perillo and Connor Coffin, and Ellis Ericson of Australia. Round 5 had Owen finish in a close second place to Dean Bowen, in an all Aussie heat that saw the exit of Sam Patterson and Tom Myers. In Round 6, Owen topped Alejo Muniz of Brazil, and stopped fellow Aussie, Garrett Parkes. The Quarterfinals pitted Owen against past event winner, Tahitian, Tamaroa McComb, who he beat by a solid margin to advance to the Semifinals, where he topped Alejo Muniz for a second time, this time leaving him in a serious combo situation.
This win was a solid start to Owen’s 2009 Junior campaign, following the World Championships earlier this month, where he was stopped by Fronchie, Marc Lacomare in the third Round.
Next up for the Juniors is the Oakley Pro Junior on North Stradbroke Island, running from February 3rd to 7th. Log on to the Hurley Buleigh website for photos, videos and heat sheets.
