Movistar Pro in San Bartolo, Peru – recap

The 2009 Movistar Pro, presented by Rip Curl and Samsung has drawn to a close, with Venezuelan surfer, Rafael Pereira taking the win over local Peruvian runner-up, Sebastián Alarcon.

The 2 Star event turned out to be a completely Latin American affair, with surfers present from Peru, Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, Mexico, Argentina and elsewhere in South and Central America. Though the event winner only went home with 500 points and a $5,000 check, the points on offer were enough to help elevate a few competitors into the top 20 in these early days of the 2009 WQS season. Venezuela’s Magnum Martinez and Chile’s Manuel Selman sit at 12th and 13th in the rankings, respectively, as a result of their competing in the O’Neill SI Pro earlier this month, and the Movistar Pro last week. A bit further down the rankings are Mexico’s Dylan Southworth at 26th and Peru’s Gabriel Villaran at 27th, both of who also have competed in both events offered so far this year.

We are a long way from Hawaii, and a couple of months from now most of these early day point leaders may find themselves a bit further down the totem pole once a 5 star and a few 6 star events have passed. The women’s Movistar Pro kicks off on Friday, officially launching the 2009 Women’s WQS. Next up for the men is the 5 Star Hang Loose Pro in Fernando de Noronha, Brazil, running from February 9th to the 15th.
