Skimboarding is way cooler than rollerblading, but still that same kind of comparison up against surfing and skateboarding

This is George Bryan, he’s an X-Trak skim team rider, and this is a recent Banzai Pipeline type shot at The Wedge. Only his inside arm isn’t raised up gliding the roof of the barrel with his fingertips, and he’s not standing straight up with a slight arch in his back. But he is on a skimboard… Skimboarding is cool in situations like this. Yet, getting throated like sooooo wouldn’t convince the dude to put down the skim, and pick up a stick. How does getting barreled like this not make you want to be a surfer?! I can’t even remember the last time I got a barrel this good. But I do remember the last time I rode a skimboard, and what it feels like to take flight when you hit a not so moist enough patch of sand. In case you don’t know how that works the board stops and sticks on a dime, and everything you are goes sling-shotting forward. Think peddling full speed on a bicycle, and then the front of a car pulling out in your path.

Goodtimes…

And speaking of which, here’s George getting more tubes, and long rides furthering my “Why don’t you just surf” theory:

Someone tell these groms before it’s too late:

Surfing is for kooks, dont disrespect our sport because you suck at it. Skimming is much harder than standing up on a board and riding a wave.

    ^^ Huh?

  3. Frank says:

Thanks for putting skimboarding out there for more to see. Sad that you have no respect for skimming. I respect the hell out of surfing and the industry and all surffers. But most of these guys who skim also surf. So just because you might not be able to skim yourself, don’t hate on us. What’s next, you call two in surfing lame since it’s not “really surfing” since you don’t paddle in? We are not trying to be like surfing or skating. We ARE skimboarders and wouldn’t want to be compared to surfing anyway.

  4. Frank says:

I meant tow in. Damn I’m tired. haha

Dont knock skimming because your dont like geos style….if you want a pic of someone steezing it up check out paulo prietto.

and by the way…Bill Bryan and Jaime Lovett skim….and they surf better than you do to.

  7. derik says:

skimboarding has a difficulty level most surfers cant comprehend. im a good surfer and skimboarder… lol god i hate when surfers try to pull this shit.

  8. Dizzletrizzlemynizzlefizz says:

O and skimboarding is just a different way to get to a wave then paddling….if you count tow in’s as surfing than skimboarding is surfing as well.

  9. derik says:

another comment, i have a skimboard with a leash plug and surf outbreak regularly with it, ive been out in 10 foot surf on it, and its a blast.

i dont need fins to hold the face or throw sprays on a head high wave.

  10. Cameron says:

Skimming is better than surfing. Now do you get it

  11. Doctor Delicious says:

    A little skimboarding statistic:

About 80% of professional skimboarders can and do surf very well.

About 2% of professional surfers can and do skimboards very well.

What does this mean? I will leave that to you to decide.

  12. Mike says:

Usually surfers that i encounter while skimming are cool and stoked about Skimboarding. Im suprised your this ignorant about another sport. You’ve givin a bad name to Skimboarding AND Surfing in my view. Now when i see a surfer my first thought going to be ” I wonder if they are an asshole prick” like you.
Maybe if you knew how to skimboard, you would understand why its so great and not “another way of surfing”.

Why fuck a chick in the vag when you can fuck her in the ass? Both essentially sex but different sensations. As with riding a wave in skimboarding and surfing.

  16. Nick says:

I’ve been skimming 1 and a half years now, only until about 6 months ago did I successfully ride a wave. That means it took me 1 whole year to ride a wave skimboarding. I tried surfing, about 2 months ago, the first day I caught about 20 waves all by myself, this was on an 8 foot board of course. So naturally, since I’m used to a small board, I bought a 5’8″ Klimax shortboard. I still rode a wave the first day using the board, compared to skimboarding, Surfing is wayy easier.

  17. Tweak says:

So, tell me, did you hurt your vagine when you fell off your skimboard. Hint: you’re doing wrong. Ride on the water next time, not the sand.

  18. Skim/Surfer says:

First of all I’d like to say don’t listen to that first guy. Second…

Being pretty good at surfing and skimming, I know that from videos skimming might seem like a lesser version of surfing. However, once you actually do both at a decently high level, you realize that they are just different things being performed on waves. Sure surfing allows for more consistently larger waves, longer rides, and stronger cutbacks due to having fins, but skimming has its positives too.

There aren’t as many crowds in skimming, leading to fewer snaking incidents and positioning and paddle battles which makes for a better atmosphere. And even though the waves are generally for shorter rides, you don’t have to paddle all the way back out to the lineup making it easier to catch SOO many more waves. As for the riding, skimming allows you to incorporate more skateboard-like moves like shove its, chop hops, big spins, and also riding switch. All these differences make it really hard to compare the two in a general sense. Surfing is better for some things and skimming for others.

As for the sticking to the dry sand thing, that’s something you learn how to prevent once you just get a little better.

Oh, and about those groms: you don’t have to worry about them. They already shred at skimming and surfing haha. Hope this cleared up some misunderstandings.

  19. ko says:

skimboarders shouldn’t take offense to this poorly written article, im not surprised it was written by a surfer.

  20. Aaron Peluso says:

Here are some reasons why to skim instead of surf.

When the waves get good, you skim with 10 friends, instead of 150 “not friends”

For the same size waves, skim gives you way more of an adrenaline rush. Probably because when you fall you fall on land not in the water. But also cause shorebreak is powerful and unpredictable. If you live in Hawaii or Tahiti, of course surf… dont be an idiot. But if you live in laguna beach or Cabo san lucas, of course skim, don’t be an idiot.

No skegs means an interesting fusion of skate tricks and wave riding that surfing will probably never match. Roundhouse cutbacks are great, but not exactly challenging.

In the end, you probably do whatever the conditions call for. If its firing for surfing, go surf. If its firing for skimming go skim… if you don’t you probably are either just (a) closed minded or (b) cant skim worth shit.

Interestingly, most skimmers are competent surfers as well… you can’t say the same about surfers.

  21. Skim says:

Whats wrong with getting barreled on a skimboard….?

We like to skim because we can get barreled, then do a 540 bigspin down the line..and still smack the lip.

Most skimboarders surf, including George bryan, idk why this article was printed the main point of “Why dont you surf isnt valid.”

Just because you cant sandskim doesnt mean we should stop skimming..i mean i tought a kid to skimtoday and he wasnt even getting stuck on sand, and he hasnt road any kind of board ever.

    YAY

  22. Joe Guy says:

This is why skimboarding will never go anywhere. I would never give up a bigspin for airs when you can still do them and with more variation, if you cant get on the skim, just keep trying and maybe one day after you figure out how to turn without fins you will get something out of it

  25. skimmydood. says:

you guys got skimmers all wrong. most skimmers do surf. its not a “you only do one” kinda thing. as for why do it, well, because its so versatile. you can still have fun on a 1/2 ft to 1 ft day, and then also get shacked on a huge day too. try not to put down other sports you “don’t understand” or “don’t like”, it makes the website and the article look trashy and poorly done.

  26. Whit says:

Surfing is not for kooks, and neither is skimboarding. I’ve been doing both about the same amount of time (roughly 17 years), and depending on the conditions and how I feel I can get about the same enjoyment from either. Skimboarding has a steeper learning curve to get to the point where you’re riding waves, but once you’re there, it’s one of those sports that is what you make of it. If you’re a fast runner, you can hit a wave, bash the lip, start pumping down the line, and either pull into a barrel (if the wave’s big enough), or pop a 360 shove-it, or just spin some 360s on the face back up onto the beach. And you can skim on the smallest of days, when there’s nothing even breaking on the bar but you have little ankle biters on the beach, and still have a blast.

Surfing is a quicker path to enjoyment for beginners, assuming the waves are good. Of course your rides are usually longer, and it takes significantly less effort to go down the line and get barreled, but it takes more work and finesse to take the board off the top. You can’t just whip it around like you can a skimboard, you have to use the wave more and guide it b/c of the fins.

The problem I see is a lot of surfers don’t have an accurate idea of what high performance skimboarding is, and assume that skimboarders don’t (or can’t) surf.

Bill Bryan, the guy in your videos, does surf. He’s a really good surfer. He also is phenomenal at the flowrider, and pretty much every boardsport he touches. The reason he primarily skimboards, I’m assuming, is because it offers much more of a challenge in terms of getting INTO the wave, and holding your line (you don’t have fins holding you in place on the face).

It always amazes me how much disrespect I get when I’m holding a skimboard, and it makes me laugh when I see guys that can’t surf half as well as me get out of the water and walk past me while I’m skimming, looking at me like I’M a kook. Meanwhile they’re putting along in 2 foot slop while I’m popping airs off 2 foot reforms at full speed.

Of course, when it’s overhead and barreling, you can guess which board I’m picking up.

  27. Rob says:

who are you skinboarders trying to fool.

i mean we all know that surfing is the greatest sport on earth right?

  28. Alfredo says:

Fyi George Bryan surfs…. This argument is invalid

  29. Freakin Rican says:

    haha, your article got powned.

  30. William Roberts says:

It’s pretty well established that skimboarding is more difficult than surfing. And next time you try to disrespect skimboarding. Why not do the following.

    1.) Actually try the sport

2.) Post alternative media. Not everything from two people. Actually maybe google “skimboarding”.

3.) Get a new tagline for your site…it’s incredible lame and gay.

  31. teddy says:

this guy speaking for the small percentage of asses that dont respect skimboarding. i am friends with so many surfers here in LA and they all respect the fact that i can skim the way i can, because they realize how difficult it is. and i completely respect them back for their surfing. unlike you. one-sided. biased. annoying…

  34. Jones says:

Although the main points have already been stated by fellow skimboarders and SOMBers I’d just like to state my opinion. Surfing is awesome and as many skimborders I have respect for surfing and it’s industry. Why do you have to dis skimboarding because you’re not good? In response to “Why don’t you just surf” many skimboarders do surf, including those that you talk about in your article. If they continue to skimboard after having experienced surfing, don’t you think there’s something about it worthwhile to them?

  35. Jones says:

I’m sorry you either had a bad experience with skimboarding, or just give-up too easily. Skimboarding takes a lot more to learn than surfing does. While both are fun, and are about (in the case of wave-riding) caching good waves, they are two different sports.

  36. onielletniesilverobrienvolcomboarder says:

Bottom line – The soul of surfing was highjacked a long time ago by multinational corporations, who the fuck needs a surf companies shoes anyway? Are they made for surfing, who are you surfing jesus? This is how things work. Something pure and noble is highjacked and the next generation, craving something truer will create the next wave. Accept it…

  37. zeus says:

now now derek, you know those waves are too close to shore for this broo. he might fall and brake something, not just get tossed around in a wave and maybe swallow water at most.

  40. Pat says:

To answer your “why don’t you just surf” theroy, I have found that it is because they cannot swim and skim boarders are scarred to venture futher from the safety of the shoreline. So people who cannot swim but would like to surf pick up skim boarding as it allows to participate in a “surfing like sport” without exposing their inability to swim and weakness to deeper water.

  41. Brian Meekins says:

to answer your question, they probably think it’s harder. boy are they wrong.

but in all seriousness, it’s probably something to do with the fact that they can’t handle a bigger stick, like a virgin who strays away from “well-endowed” men.

  42. Michael Chung says:

I’ve always wanted to try skimboarding when there were no waves. Those boards cost too much though, rather save the money for a new surfboard =).

  43. kevin says:

i surf and surfing isnt for kooks for the guy that was the first to post. also i think if the skimboarders are gonna get barreled like the picture they might as well surf and enjoy everything they do except in deeper water and dont have to worry about hitting the shore skimboarding the shorebreak.

  44. mike says:

    a skimboarder trying to surf?

it would be like a fat man getting into a wetsuit.

struggling in vain until he just gives up…

and in the end everyone just laughs

  45. Kyle says:

Skimboarding is like banging a fat chick. Fun, but you wouldn’t want your friends to see you doing it.

  51. Joey says:

    Wow.

Okay, lets take this nice and slow for you “Messy Jesse”.

    1) George Bryan surfs. Yup, that’s right. He surfs and skimboards.

    2) You suck at skimboarding. You stated that. Now you expect us to listen to what you have to say about skimming?

    3) Neither sport is better, it doesn’t have to be some kind of competition. Other surfers can accept skimboarding, and skimmers respect surfing. I don’t see what your problem is.
Fuck off, or at least take a bit to think about what your saying next time.

  52. leroy hankins says:

skimming is fuckin gay, so are skimmers, theyre idea of getting barreled is getting there hair wet int he lip but with surfing to get barreled requires actualy RIDING in the barrel. skimmers are like gay aggro spongers. SURFING RULES

  53. teej says:

surfing… sounds overrated to me. and 9 out of 10 surfers are jerks.

  54. sherwin says:

now now calm down people, i surf yeah but i dont skim i really dont skim i see people skim on our beach and sometimes stare at them with amazement “i wish i could do that” i hang out with them sometimes, they’re cool people i don’t hate any sports i just want to point out both are cool as long as what your doing is fun for you and for others and that’s what is all about surfers and skimmers we share the same goal and that is STOKED to the max. so lets stop this “which is better” crap lets just grab our gears and hit the waves and be STOKED HIGH till we drop -soul surfers and soul skimmers
