Quiksilver Pro, Gold Coast – three times a lay day

After a solid start on Saturday, where we saw the completion of Round 1, the 2009 Quiksilver Pro, Gold Coast, presented by LG Mobile has been put on hold for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.  With small waves on tap at both the main contest area and the back up sites to the north and south, even organizers have decided to wait out the lull in swell.  The event runs through the 11th of March, allowing plenty of time to finish the remaining rounds of competition.

The first round showed an interesting mix of performances, with some front-running pros continuing their streak of domination, while others fell to newbies, wildcards and back-of-packers.  Third time Aussie wildcard, Julian Wilson put on a stellar early performance, relegating 2008 World Tour runner-up, Bede Durbidge to the loser’s round.  Similar break out performances were made by rookie Fronchie Tim Boal; Hawaiian rookie Kekoa Bacalso; returning World Tour veterans, Greg Emslie (ZAF) and Josh Kerr (AUS); and injury replacement surfer, Jay “Bottle” Thompson, who trounced Cooly kid, Joel Parkinson and Cali stylemaster, Taylor Knox.

When competition finally resumes, we’ll pick up with the start of Round 2.  Go to the event website for updates, photos, heats on demand, heat sheets and all the live action.
