The 2009 Quiksilver Pro, Gold Coast, presented by LG Mobile finally got back in the water on Saturday and ran through all 16 heats before calling it a day. After running more than half of the Round 2 heats at one of the designated back up spots at nearby Duranbah, the call was made to move the competition back to the main venue at Snapper Rocks. Saturday’s heats were rewarded with head high to overhead surf, making for great conditions for the first elimination round.
The world’s best put in some amazing performances in Round 2, with the day’s biggest highlight going to everyone’s favorite Californian sophomore, Dane Reynolds, who pulled out a perfect 10 in his heat against fellow golden stater, Nathaniel Curran, with a back to back combination of aerials. Dane, working with a still swollen ankle, threw a huge frontside double-grab air, which executed as smoothly as a quick top turn, then went right into a big frontside reverse aerial, which he landed and continued to ride out the wave. It was an amazing performance for the recovering star, and had the crowd on the beach and at home cheering for the ultra-likeable pro.
Facing the first early exits of the season were Aussie wildcards, Danny Wills and Cory Ziems; Euro surfers, Marlon Lipke (DEU), Aritz Aranburu (EUK), Michel Bourez (PYF) and Micky Picon (FRA); Cooly kid and past event winner, Dean Morrison; California boys, Chris Ward, Bobby Martinez, Tim Reyes and Nathaniel Curran; Aussies, Phil MacDonald, Mick Campbell, Kai Otton and Ben Dunn; and Florida boy, Gabe Kling.
When competition resumes, we will jump into Round 3. Log on to the event website for updates, photos, heats on demand, and all the live action.
