Roxy Pro, Gold Coast – Finals recap

The 2009 Roxy Pro, Gold Coast, presented by LG Mobile drew to a close on Sunday morning, running through the semifinals and final in clean rippable waves at the main event site of Snapper Rocks.

Picking up in the semifinals, our reigning World Champ, Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) won a decisive victory over Kiwi rookie, Paige Hareb, and Melanie Bartels (HAW) handily defeated fellow Hawaiian, Coco Ho.  After the two semifinal heats, the event took a short break to run the men’s Quiksilver Pro expression session.

When the ladies final kicked off, Steph Gilmore came out of the gates dominating, scoring a 9.57 out of 10 on her first wave, and then quickly backing it up with a 5.17.  Melanie Bartels had a less successful start to the heat, pulling into a number of throwaway rides before finally posting a 12.50 heat total.  Unfortunately for Mel, Steph already had the event sewed up without the need for a higher backup score (which she did anyway).

Check out the event website for photos, heats on demand, heat sheets and a complete event wrapup.  Congratulations Steph Gilmore!  Nice to see you well on the road to World Title number 3.
