Round 4 of the 2009 Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast kicked off on Tuesday morning in Coolangatta in wind-swept right hand barrels brought on by cyclone Hamish off the Australian coast.
Floridian, CJ Hobgood won the first heat of the day, narrowly topping a very in-form Jihad Khodr of Brazil, while twin brother, Damien Hobgood, took out Slater slayer and event wildcard, Julian Wilson. The other goofyfoots weren’t so lucky, with Hawaii’s Fred Patacchia falling to top Brazilian, Adriano de Souza, and Ace Buchan being eliminated by fellow Aussie, Tom Whitaker. Coolie kids, Joel Parkinson and Mick Fanning showed their local expertise, taking down fellow Aussie, Chris Davidson, and Fronchie, Jeremy Flores, respectively. Gold Coaster, Bede Durbidge took down South African super-sophomore Jordy Smith, while top West Oz surfer, Taj Burrow narrowly snuck by frothing Californian, Dane Reynolds.
The quarterfinals put on an equally good show, with the Coolie kids, Joel Parkinson and Mick Fanning handily defeating the Florida twins, CJ and Damien Hobgood. Adriano de Souza was on fire again, comboing Bede Durbidge. Taj Burrow surfed the final heat of the day, just barely sneaking by Ace Buchan, to move on to the semifinals. The semis will feature the Coolie kids facing off against one another, and Taj Burrow tackling the up-and-coming Adriano de Souza.
With waves on the rise, we should see an amazing few hours of semifinal and final heats when competition resumes. Log on to the event website for updates, photos, heats on demand, heat sheets, and all the live action.
