The 2009 Quiksilver Pro, Gold Coast presented by LG Mobile has finally drawn to a close on Wednesday with local Coolie kid, Joel Parkinson taking home the win. Joel comboed young Brazilian, Adriano de Souza in an exciting final filled with big, windy, heaving barrels, with a final score of 18.83 to 11.30. A huge local crowd turned out at Kirra to cheer their hometown lad on to victory, despite the rain and windy weather.
Joel is the big story of the day, scoring two ten point rides on his way to victory the final day. He took down close friend and fellow local, Mick Fanning in the first heat of the day. Joel pulled out a 10 point ride to secure his win over Mick in an extremely close and high scoring heat. Joel did the same in the final, burdening Adriano with an insurmountable score in the final minutes of their heat. This is Joel’s second win at the Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast and his first event win since the 2006 season. Riding high off of his Triple Crown victory in December, and his victory at Kirra, Joel has now built up the confidence to make a real run at the title in 2009. The winner of the last three years on the Gold Coast has gone on to win the World Title. If that’s any indication of where this year is heading, then Joel is going to have a great year.
Adriano de Souza deserves praise for his performance in the event, including the fact that this was his maiden final. On his way to the final, he won his round 1 heat over Jordy Smith (ZAF) and Drew Courtney (AUS); beat Greg Emslie (ZAF) in round 3; took down Fred Patacchia in round 4; comboed world number 2, Bede Durbidge (AUS) in the quarters; and comboed Taj Burrow (AUS) in the semifinals. We can expect to see some more solid results from the talented young Brazilian as the season unfolds.
Honorable mention goes out to Mick Fanning and Taj Burrow, who both took home third place finishes in the event, and to Bede Durbidge, Ace Buchan, and CJ and Damien Hobgood, who all took home equal fifth place finishes.
