The second event of the 2009 ASP Women’s World Qualifying Series, the Maitland Toyota Open kicks off on Thursday at Merewether in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. Following on the heels of the Arnette Pro Junior and the men’s WQS event, the MR Pro, the Maitland Toyota Open is the third event in the Merewether Surfest.
This second event (and second 2 Star event of the season), follows almost two full months after the first event of the 2009 Women’s WQS season, the Copa Movistar in Peru. Former World Champ, Sofia Mulanovich (PER) will be competing to try to back up her win at the WQS season opener. She’ll have a tough fight on her hands, as a who’s who of female surfers will be in attendance to take their own shot at winning at Merewether. Sofia will be joined by other talented international surfers such as Pauline Ado (FRA), Bo Stanley (USA), Ornella Pellizzari (ARG), Nikita Robb (ZAF) and a few others. And, naturally, some of Australia’s top ladies will be on hand, including Jessi Miley-Dyer, Laura Enever, Rebecca Woods, Laurina McGrath, Amee Donoho, Nicola Atherton and several others.
