Kelly Slater semi-retires pre Bells, Andy Irons to take his spot on tour

Following his career low result at the Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast, where Kelly Slater was ousted by wildcard Quiksilver team rider Julian Wilson, leaving him with an equal 33rd, Slater has decided to call it a year. While he has not suggested he will be retiring for good, he has decided to switch hats for the time being with his former nemesis, Andy Irons. Irons, as we all know had worked out a sabbatical situation with the ASP, to allow him to take 2009 off, with a spot reserved on the 2010 tour. Apparently, just one event in, Irons is missing the tour, and keen to get back on and show what a few months off has done for his surfing.

Kelly and Andy have become quite close since their “A Fly in the Champagne” tour, with the two now regularly meeting up for surfs, foamy lattes and occasional sleep-over parties. As a result, they have worked out a spot swap deal with the approval of the ASP overlords, and Andy will officially be taking Kelly’s place at the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach. Stay tuned for all the action as the event is just days away. Check out this link for full details on Slater and Irons’ spot swap.
