6.0 Lowers Pro wraps up with twin Hawaiian victories

The 2009 6 Star Prime 6.0 Lowers Pro went off last week in San Clemente, drawing in big talents from around the globe. While the Californian hosts put on an impressive early show, Hawaiian boys proved victorious in both the 6 Star Prime WQS event and the Junior competition. Congratulations go out to Freddie Patacchia who powered through the WQS event, and reigning World Junior champ, Kai Barger, who won the Junior event.’

Freddie P. started off his campaign in Round 2, where he narrowly topped California boy, Che Stang, and ousted California’s Kolohe Andino and Florida’s Sterling Spencer. He won again in Round 3, sneaking by fellow World Tourer, Chris Ward, and stopping the advance of Micah Byrne (USA) and Willian Cardoso (BRA). Freddie dominated his all Hawaiian Round 4 heat, topping Dusty Payne and ousting Evan Valiere. In Round 5, he went on to take down an other fellow World Tour surfer, Florida’s Damien Hobgood, before comboing Dusty Payne in their quarterfinal match-up. Freddie took down yet another World Tour surfer, Fronchie rookie Tim Boal in the semis, then took a solid high-scoring win over former World Tour surfer, Ben Bourgeois in the final.

Kai Barger kicked off his path of domination with an 18.66 out of 20 in his Round 2 heat, topping Brazil’s Miguel Pupo and ousting Conner Coffin (USA) and Kyle Kennelly (USA). He easily won his quarterfinal, topping fellow Hawaiian Dege O’Connell and shutting down Albee Layer (HAW) and Luke Davis (USA). In the semis, he came in close second to fellow Hawaiian Kiron Jabour, yet stopped the advance of Dege O’Connell and Andrew Doheny (USA). Kai put on another stellar performance in the final, destroying the competition with an 18.60 out of 20. Australia’s Davey Cathels took second, Dillon Perillo (USA) took third, and Kiron Jabour took fourth.
