Two more high ranking contest down and we see still more changes in the top of the World Qualifying Series rankings. The 6 Star Prime Nike 6.0 Lowers Pro and the 6 Star Prime O’Neill Cold Water Classic recently wrapped up, with each offering 3500 ever so important points to their respective winners. Taking the wins and the big point hauls were Hawaiian World Tour surfer Fred Patacchia at the Nike 6.0 event in San Clemente, and Adam Melling of Australia in the O’Neill Cold Water Classic in Thurso, Scotland.
Melling’s win bumps him from number six to number one in the overall rankings with a point total that leaves him just 2,000 points shy of last year’s World Tour qualification cutoff. What makes his point total even more impressive is the fact that he has three “keeper” scores yet to add to his total with more than half of the year left to compete. If he keeps up his charge he can find himself qualified for the 2010 tour long before summer comes to a close. World Tour alum Daniel Ross (AUS) moved one spot up, into the number two spot, while former front-runner Owen Wright (AUS) fell to third, and former number two Jadson Andre (BRA) fell to number five. Elsewhere in the top ten, Joan Duru (FRA) went from 9th to 4th; Brett Simpson (USA) fell from 4th to 6th; Marco Polo (BRA) fell from 5th to 7th; and Jay Thompson (AUS) climbed from 10th to 8th.
Moving into the top ten after the last two events were Nathan Yeomans (USA) who jumped from 21st to 9th and Dusty Payne (HAW), who hopped from 16th to 10th. Dropping out of the top ten were Dion Atkinson (AUS), who went from 7th to 16th, and Gony Zubizarreta (ESP), who fell from 8th to 14th.
Check out the rankings below to see where the rest of the current top 30 fell.
Next up for the men’s WQS is the 1 Star Lizard Nandos Surf Pro in Durban, South Africa, running from May 15th to 17th, followed by the 3 Star Rusty Arica Pro Challenge in Arica, Chile, running from June 2nd to 7th. The next major event will kick off on the 8th of June, when the 6 Star Prime Sri Lankan Airlines Pro runs live at Pasta Point in the Maldives.
