World Qualifying Series rankings following the 6 Star Prime Sri Lankan Airlines Pro in the Maldives

Following the completion of the 6 Star Prime Nike 6.0 Lowers Pro and the 6 Star Prime O’Neill Cold Water Classic in early May, the tour took a bit of a break from the big point events. Of course there was the 1 Star Lizzard Nando Surf Pro in Durban in mid May, followed by the 3 Star Rusty Arica Pro in Chile in the beginning of June, but it was the 6 Star Prime Sri Lankan Airlines Pro in the Maldives brought the big guns this month, as well as another shift in the rankings among the top 2010 World Tour hopefuls.

For starters, Aussie wunderkind, Owen Wright has taken over the lead spot, swapping 3rd for 1st with fellow Aussie, Adam Melling. Owen started the year off gunning for the Junior title (which he is easily on the road to taking), but at this point, has set his sights on also making the 2010 World Tour. With two contest results left to be included in his points total, Owen already sits just a few points shy of last year’s point cutoff for a berth on the World Tour. His spot on next year’s Dream Tour is a now a virtual certainty.

Leaving the top 15 after the last few events are Brandon Jackson (ZAF), who slid from 15th to 21st; Gony Zubizarreta (ESP), who fell two spots to 16th; and Dusty Payne (HAW), who dropped from 10th to 24th. Taking their places among the top 15 are Austin Ware (USA), who rose to 15th; Drew Courtney (AUS), who jumped seven spots to 14th; and Pat Gudauskas (USA), whose high flying rodeo antics helped bump him twenty spots to 7th.

The men’s WQS is currently wrapping up the 4 Star O’Neill Coldwater Classic in South Africa, before moving on to the 6 Star Mr. Price Pro Ballito, which kicks off on June 29th. Tune in to the ASP World Tour website for details and links to both events.
