After much speculation (and multiple behind the scenes confirmation to DS), the ASP officially went public on Tuesday with their announcement of the location of the latest installment of the increasingly popular Rip Curl Pro Search contest. Following a successful run in Bali last year, a thrilling adventure in Chile in 2007, an other worldly contest in Mexico in 2006 and a world class event in Reunion in 2005, the decision was made to host the 2009 event in Peniche, Portugal.
Running from October 19th to 30th at the world famous “Supertubos”, the event is sure to impress. The world class Portuguese beach break provides heavy A-frame barrels for the world’s best surfers to test their skills. Depending on the conditions, it can be a solid spot for barrel hounds and beach break warriors alike.
It’s great to see another European event, especially given the largest ever Euro contingent on the World Tour this year. Further, it’s nice to see a big league event return to Portugal, particularly at a time when the country is losing a 6 Star event in Ericeira that was to be held around the same general time. Coincidence? Perhaps not. One of the cancelled 6 Star event’s main sponsors, Buondi, is already tied to the Rip Curl event. Hmmmm….
