We’ve now had two lay days in a row at the 2009 Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro and everyone’s waiting for the action to resume. During this downtime, I think it’s important to address what has often been the most complained about stop on the World Tour.
I’ve heard tons of complaints from the world’s best surfers over the years about the waves on the Brazil leg of the World Tour. Last year, nearly all of the tour front-runners opted out of the event, when Kelly Slater had effectively ended the World Title race in Europe. Though they cited a range of ailments, the truth is that Brazil never gets much love from the boys on tour. While Santa Catarina may lack the wave perfection of several of the other stops on tour (Pipeline, Teahupoo, J Bay, etc.), the first two days of this year’s Santa Catarina Pro have proven that the place does indeed get waves.
Now let’s move beyond the waves. As the above clip shows, there are plenty of reasons to love Brazil. What better way to spend a day off than to watch the local “talent” parade their goods? How many similar displays will it take to elevate Brazil’s status in the hearts and minds and loins of the world’s best surfers?
Thank you, Brazil for “endowing” us with such “bountiful” beauty. Enjoy!
