2009 Hurley Pro at Trestles – Slater dominates, Parko exits

Day three of the 2009 Hurley Pro kicked off with a exciting start on Wednesday, with clean but inconsistent conditions.

Local Californian and fan favorite Dane Reynolds through a huge frontside reverse air to take the first win of the day over Australia’s Ben Dunn.  Former World Tourer and fellow Californian, Rob Machado followed, shutting down the current world tour leader and man who would be king, Australia’s Joel Parkinson.

The third heat of the day was the one to watch, with Kelly Slater facing off against the deadly local wildcard, Brett Simpson.  Kelly swept to victory, posting the highest heat total of the day and leaving Simpo in a combo situation.

Rookie Hawaiian Kekoa Bacalso showed Australia’s Chris Davidson an early exit, while Brazil’s Heitor Alves took down top Fronchie Jeremy Flores.  Florida’s Hobgood twins both earned a seat in round four, with Damien taking out Portugese tiger, Tiago Pires, and CJ knocking out Australia’s Luke Stedman.

Michel Bourez is now the last Fronchie standing after the young Tahitian comboed Australia’s Dean Morrison to continue on to round four.  Former World Champ, Mick Fanning fought back for Australia, comboing France’s Miky Picon and earning the second highest heat total of the day.  The final heat featured the third France-Australia matchup of the day, with a narrow win going to Australia’s Kieren Perrow over France’s Tim Boal.

When competition resumes we’ll see the start of round four, where Aussie compatriots Bede Durbidge and Kai Otton will start the fight for a quarterfinal seat.  Log on to the event website for photos, videos on demand, and heat sheets, and be sure to check back tomorrow for the morning call.
