It's a little known fact that the biggest pollutant to hit the oceans isn't those plastic bags from your local supermarket, or oil from the Exxon Valdez or brown trout from your local sewer, it's CIGARETTE BUTTS. If you're a surfer who smokes, well, you should quit. But if you're in town, and you see someone toss a cigarette our their car window, give ‘em hell. Those butts get washed into the sewage, and out into the ocean. It's nasty. Ok, rant over.

this summer i was so bummed to see the local crowd and tourists during peak season continually throwing butts on the beautiful beaches of the outer banks. it isn’t new info that littering sucks, its just so hard to sit back and the ignorance and apathy for the local environment by the general local and visiting public. i know not everyone on the beach contributes but enough people are screwing it up. there is more trash on the roads, on the beach and on the national seashore than i have ever seen! better wisen up, around here you get called a hippie for respecting the environment, doesn’t mean you have to be a hippie to love your mother!!! nature bats last
I hate how people treat the beach like a giant ashtray.
Hey, you guys should do an article on the Great Pacific Garbage patch. You can look it up on wikipedia and algalita.org. So much needs to be done!
I watched a tourist throw his cigarette butt into the ocean last night. He was standing with his wife. I told him it was wrong, and then I walked over to a group of tourists standing nearby and made an example of his bad deed.
For this action, I hope one less person thinks before he throws another cigarette into the ocean.
It’s so wrong for people to stand there looking at something so beautiful and pollute it at the same time!!!
All the garbage thrown in the ocean will go back to us someday one way or another. If we will not show concern to our nature who else will? Probably switching to electronic cigarette such as blu cig will help prevent this problem since no cigarette butt will be produced after smoking and it does not also produce harmful second hand smoke.
