Papua New Guinea – Going off the surf map

PrintEmailShare

More well known tribal warfare, cannibalism, one of a kind animals and diseases, and for being one of the world's last truly exotic places, Papua New Guinea is also a fantastic place to head for a surf trip.  With a season that runs from November to April, it's a perfect escape for a northern hemisphere winter getaway, or a southern hemisphere summer holiday.

If you travel beyond the major towns and away from the highlands, danger can be easily avoided in this country known for its troubles.  Many of the islands to the north and east (north of the Solomon Islands) are known for hosting traveling surfers and have reef passes to die for.   Getting there can be a bit difficult, depending on where you're coming from.  Flights are available to the capital, Port Moresby from most major Australasian cities.  After that, puddle jumper flights and a combination of boat and car rides will get you the rest of the way to most of the islands.  The trip will be long, but as those who have been there can attest, it will be worth it.  Weather is tropical, as PNG sits on the same latitude as Indonesia.  As such, tropical pests, malaria and broiling sunshine are always a danger.

A little bit of online searching will turn up a wealth of knowledge and information on surfing and traveling in Papua New Guinea, including surf camps, surf resorts, maps and surf travel companies specializing in the country.  If you've been there, or you go there, tell us about it.

Get off the surf map and go explore.
