Surfing Illustrated Book Review

We just checked out Surfing Illustrated, a new instructional surf book….we were stoked to see they used the word stoked 5 times on the opening page, and we also like the fact that a portion of the book sales are being donated to the Surfrider Foundation.

If you’re a beginner, hopefully you have some friends to show you the ropes….but if not, this book can fill the void so you won’t be a complete kook on your first few days out.  It’s not your typical instructional book, it explains via illustrations how to choose a board, scope out the surf, paddle to zones, and covers etiquette (rights of way, splitting waves) once you get surfing.   There is also a good section on troubleshooting, with pictures, to tell you how to avoid pearling all day and how to generally avoid hurting yourself.  It also hits on exercises and surf-school type tips…for example try doing pop-ups in a rising elevator, to get the feeling of popping up when your board starts planing.  Overall, this is a good book for beginners with lots of pictures and illustrations so you can quickly get the basics.
