Indo Jax Surf School spreads the stoke!

DSC05345

If your family doesn't surf at all, there is pretty much no better way to learn how to surf than by getting lessons from a surf camp. And if  you're lucky enough that you do have a family who surfs, have a house on the beach, and were given a surfboard for your third birthday, then let me get this out of the way:  I truly envy you and your craaazy ludicrous good fortune... can your family adopt me?   Right, so... anyways, surf camps are great for those people with no surfing background whatsoever … [Read more...]

Kassia Meador makes us sweat

kassia-nykassia014

We recently had the great pleasure of sitting down for coffee with the lovely Kassia Meador, who was in town promoting her most recent film, Dear and Yonder. She’s magical on the water, beautiful in print and absolutely captivating in person. Kassia weighed in on everything from the correct pronunciation of her name, to surf travel and quiver shuffling, to who she’s currently crushing on. Despite the oppressively steamy summer day, Kassia was every bit the elegant gal we all dream about.  Drop … [Read more...]

River surfing in Africa

If getting to the infamous Pororoca in the Amazon River wasn't challenging enough for you to get to and survive, consider giving this African river wave a try.  Though it's a much different type of wave than its famous Amazonian cousin, this river rapid in Zambia is every bit as deadly and challenging.  While the challenges to those hunting the Pororoca are well documented and known, from crocodiles to piranha to the infamous candiru, who like to swim up and attach themselves to the inside of … [Read more...]

5’9″ Bufo Fibre Jet – My Dream Quiver

bufo_fibre_jet

Here’s another board I’d like to try from this German volkssurfboardsmakerinman, BUFO. The design seems to imagine a board like the ones the guys on tour are riding these days; a little shorter than the normal short board, a little thicker and wider in the mid-section. As I said before, with guys like Marlon Lipke, Robbie Page and Tom Curren riding them, they can’t be half bad. And, once again, I’d be happy to be the first American test pilot/reviewer. Seriously… call me! (Editor's Note: … [Read more...]

Technology and the ASP World Tour – bringing surfing to your desktop

Not being able to watch the Boost Mobile Pro because I was chained to my desk many miles away from the heart of the action was not fun. But the ASP World Tour made it fly with the webcast concept. Indeed, even pro surfers like Tom Curren are in on it. In recent interview with DailyStoke.com, Curren says he stays on top of the tour by the webcast when he can't be there live. The ASP has managed to stay on the cutting edge of technology, bringing the top contests live to our homes, via the internet.  … [Read more...]

The story behind THIS Kelly Slater vid – Talking with Morgan Maassen

If you haven't seen this YouTube vid of Kelly Slater saying "Hello, Rincon", you should. We tracked down the dude who made it, and he just so happens to be Santa Barbara local, Morgan Maassen. What's more, and more important, is that this surf filmmaker is only 18 years old, and already creating some pretty amazing surfing videos. Morgan Maassen is the real deal. We recently caught up with Morgan to find out more about how Slater knocked the logger down... DailyStoke: So I’m surfing around, … [Read more...]

2009 Billabong Pro Mundaka – Parko out, Slater dominates

2009-billabong-pro-mundaka-kelly-slater

The 2009 Billabong Pro Mundaka finally went live again on Monday. After a truncated start way back on the 5th of October, where the event only ran through the first eight heats of round 1, the nod was finally given to resume the event during what appears to be one of the best of the remaining days in the event window. Roughly translated - Mundaka isn't really putting out, but the boys decided to give her a go anyways. The biggest news on Monday was Joel Parkinson's early exit. Parko took home … [Read more...]
