Pro Surfing and Contests

2008 Billabong Pipeline Masters

The 2008 Billabong Pipeline Masters is just a few days away from its December 8th start date.  Running through December 20th, the Pipe Masters is marking its 38th year, making it the world’s longest running professional surf contest.  This contest also marks the last event of the 2008 World Tour season and the final event of the Van’s Triple Crown of Surfing.  At the end of this event, two champions will be crowned and we will also lock in the final openings in the top 45 of the 2009 World Tour.

Kelly Slater has taken home the top honors at Pipe five times, while his former rival Andy Irons has taken the Pipe Masters title four times.  See this post regarding possible winners and see this post regarding one possible WQS - World Tour hopeful.

Looking back at past Pipe contests from the last ten years, the Pipe Masters were:

2007 Bede Durbidge (HAW)

2006 Andy Irons (HAW)

2005 Andy Irons (HAW)

2004 Jamie O’Brien (HAW)

2003 Andy Irons (HAW)

2002 Andy Irons (HAW)

2001 no contest - season cut short because of September 11th terrorist attacks

2000 Rob Machado (USA)

1999 Kelly Slater (USA)

1998 Jake Paterson (AUS)

Final heat seeds have yet to been filled and there is no word yet on exactly which wildcards we’ll see.  That should all shake out over the next 24 hours.  Our friends over at Surfline are calling for good waves on the North Shore on Monday, with a decreasing northwest swell, with wave heights still coming in well overhead.  If the swell stays strong enough, we may get to see the first Round clash as early as day one.  Otherwise, forecasters are calling for a new northwest swell to start filling in as soon as Tuesday.  Tune in to the event website for further details and for the 8:00 am call on Monday.  See you at Pipe.
