The 2008 Movistar Classic Mancora Peru wrapped up today with reigning World Champ and defending event champ, Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) taking the win. Gilmore took the much needed win in the finals over Brazilian, Silvana Lima, putting Steph back in the driver’s seat for the 2008 World Title, putting her almost 200 points ahead of the now 2nd in the rankings, Sofia Mulanovich (PER). Sofia, who hoped to maintain her lead in the rankings and win the event in front of her home crowd, went down in the Quarterfinals to Rebecca Woods (AUS). It was an unfortunate loss for her, but a loss that keeps the race for the title closer as the Women’s World Tour moves into its Hawaiian leg. Gilmore topped some of the world’s best on her way to victory, including Megan Abubo (HAW) in Round 1, Jacqueline Silva (BRA) in the Quarterfinals, and seven time world champ, Layne Beachley (AUS) in the Semifinals. On her way to the runner-up spot, Silvana Lima took down Nicola Atherton (AUS) in Round 3, Karina Petroni (USA) in the Quarterfinals, and Rebecca Woods (AUS) in the Semifinals. This finish puts Silvana at 4th in the rankings, within the realm of striking distance of the title, if she can take wins in the final two events.
