2009 ASP Women’s World Tour rankings - after event 1: Roxy Pro Gold Coast

The Roxy Pro on the Gold Coast is over and the ladies first rankings of 2009 are all lined up. As with the guys, these are still early days, and much will change as the season unwinds.

Leading the rankings is 2007 and 2008 World Champ and 2009 Roxy Pro winner, Stephanie Gilmore of Australia. Steph came out of the gates firing at the Roxy Pro and continued to dominate throughout the event, showing the world why she’s won the title two years running.

Number 2 in the rankings goes to Hawaii’s Melanie Bartels, who took ninth in the world last year.

Equal third in the rankings is shared by World Tour rookies, Paige Hareb of New Zealand and Coco Ho of Hawaii. Both girls put on a hell of a show, taking out several tour leaders along the way.

Former World Champ and last year’s Gold Coast winner, Sofia Mulanovich sits at fifth place, along with Aussies, Rebecca Woods and Chelsea Hedges, and rookie Bruna Schmitz of Brazil. Equal ninths go to Brazilians, Silvana Lima and Jacqueline Silva; Aussies, Amee Donohoe, Sam Cornish and Sally Fitzgibbons; Hawaiian’s Alana Blanchard and Megan Abubo; and Rosanne Hodge from South Africa. Rounding out the rankings are Jessi Miley-Dyer who sits at seventeenth after posting the same number as a result in the Roxy Pro, and Layne Beachley, who though technically retired, is capable of entering any event she chooses this year, after finishing at fourth in the world last year.

Next up for the ladies, we have the Rip Curl Women’s Pro at Bells Beach, presented by Ford New Fiesta, running from April 8th to the 13th. Only a few weeks left to wait and we’re back to live action. See you at Bells.
