2009 ASP Women’s World Tour finally locked in

Following up on my earlier report on the state of the 2009 Women’s World Tour top 17, we have received final confirmation from the great folks at the ASP regarding the locked in list.  Chelsea Hedges has been awarded the ASP Wildcard slot, after finishing at 7th in the world in 2007, then taking off the 2008 season to give birth.  While this is great news for Chelsea, it is bad news for Julia De La Rosa (PER), who was hoping to take the injury wildcard after missing the Hawaiian leg of the tour due to injury.

The other tough news focuses on Hawaii’s Megan Abubo, another 2009 hopeful after finishing 2008 in 11th place.  Though Layne Beachley is slipping into semi-retirement, she is still going to retain her seat on the 2009 World Tour.  As such, Megan Abubo is forced to return to the minor league if she wishes to make a comeback in 2010.  She will however, be waiting on the sidelines, as the first replacement surfer for any of the ladies who misses an event for injury or otherwise.  Expect to see plenty of Megan in 2009.  The other two replacement surfers are Aussies, Laurina McGrath and Nicola Atherton.

We have just two months to go until the 2009 ASP Women’s World Tour kicks off.  Looking forward to seeing all the ladies on the Gold Coast in the end of February.
