While we’re all still basking in the glow of King Kelly Slater’s return to form at the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro, little attention has been paid to some of the other movers and shakers on the 2009 World Tour. Following Slater’s triumphant return in Brazil, the rankings have shaken up a bit.
For starters, let’s take a look at the front ten. Joel Parkinson (AUS) still sits comfortably in front, at number one in the rankings, with a slightly diminished point lead after his solid equal third place finish in Brazil. Adriano de Souza (BRA) has jumped from fifth to second in the world, thanks to his runner up finish. C.J. Hobgood (USA) jumped a spot to third following his equal third place result in the event. Taj Burrow (AUS) fell from second to fourth, while Mick Fanning (AUS) fell from third to fifth. Bobby Martinez (USA) climbed one spot to number six, while Tom Whitaker (AUS) climbed one spot to number seven. Jordy Smith (ZAF) fell from sixth to eighth on the back of his lowest result in 2009. Kelly Slater (USA) jumped from twenty-fifth to ninth. Rounding out the top ten was Damien Hobgood (USA), whose ninth place finish in Brazil had him maintain his ranking.
Other big movers and losers included Bede Durbidge (AUS), whose fifth place in Brazil bumped him from fourteenth to eleventh; Fred Patacchia (HAW), whose season low thirty-third saw him drop from ninth to thirteenth; Dustin Barca (HAW), whose equal fifth place saw him jump from number thirty to nineteenth; Chris Ward (USA), who jumped from thirty-fifth to twenty-seventh with his best result of 2009; and Timmy Reyes (USA), who went from thirtieth to twenty-first on his strongest result this season.
Check the list for the complete results, and stay tuned as we’re just days away from another rankings change, with the Billabong Pro kicking off July 7th at Jeffreys Bay.
