2009 World Qualifying Series rankings following the 6 Star Prime Quiksilver Pro Durban and 6 Star Estoril Quiksilver Pro

Two more events down and plenty of changes amongst the rankings front runners on the 2009 World Qualifying Series. Following the concurrent completion of two high ranking Quiksilver events, the 6 Star Prime Quiksilver Pro Durban and the 6 Star Estoril Quiksilver Pro, the ratings leaders have seen a shuffle.

Winners post Durban and Portugal include top Aussie talent Owen Wright, whose runner-up finish in South Africa has put him from 8th in the rankings to the catbird seat, while Brazil’s Jadson Andre went from 16th to second following his win at the Durban event. One spot climbers included Former World Tour surfer Daniel Ross of Australia bumped up one notch to number 3, Brazil’s Marco Polo climbed from 6th to 5th, Spain’s Gony Zubizarreta, who jumped from 9th to 8th, and former World Tour surfer Jay Thompson who hopped one spot to crack the top 10. Other big ratings climbers were Japan’s top surfer, Masatoshi Ohno, who jumped to 15th in the rankings with his highest 6 Star event finish to date; former World Tour surfer Travis Logie of South Africa, who joins the top rankings at number 13; fellow Saffa, Brandon Jackson, who went from 22nd to 12th; Hawaiian talent Dusty Payne, who jumped from 31st to 16th; Aussie boy Matt Wilkinson, who arrived at number 17 in the rankings; Ireland’s Glenn Hall who joined the rankings leaders at 18th; and Australian World Tour surfer, Drew Courtney, who showed up at number 19.

A number of front-runners dropped in the ratings following the last two events, including previous ratings leader, Australia’s Adam Melling fell to 6th place. California’s top surfers also took a hit - Brett Simpson fell from 2nd to 4th; Patrick Gudauskas fell from 16th to 23rd; and Nate Yeomans dropped a spot from 20th to 21st. Several Brazilians saw a drop in the rankings, including Pablo Paulino, who went from 5th to 11th; Jean da Silva, who went from 10th to 14th; Paulo Moura, who went from 14th to 19th; and former World Tour surfer, Leonardo Neves, who fell from 15th to 22nd. South African hopeful, Warwick Wright fell from 13th to 24th, while Brazilian charger Bruno Santos dropped from 12th to 47th.

Next up for the WQS men are another two concurrent high ranking contests, the 6 Star Prime Nike 6.0 Lowers Pro in California and the 6 Star Prime O’Neill Highland Open in Thurso, Scotland. The Nike event kicks off on Tuesday, April 28th and runs through May 2nd, while the O’Neill contest begins on Wednesday, April 29th and runs through May 6th.

  1. California is the new Brazil. The only American with a chance of advancing in a WCT event under the new format is Brett Simpson and that would only happen at Trestles.

    Did you see the Pat Gudauskas versus Jihad heat at Bells? The guy fell on every wave he paddled into. If Pat is the Dan Malloy of the Gudauskas clan, then each consider trading their travel budgets for film school tuition.

    I guess Dusty Payne is the new Jamie O’Brien? Outstanding Triple Crown performance, but no results on the WQS. Looking forward to see who wins (or even attends) the Chopes trials.
