Following the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro in Brazil, the big winner, Bede Durbidge (AUS), also posted a strong result in what has become the race for number 2, moving into runner-up position behind the already crowned 2008 World champion, Kelly Slater (USA). Taj Burrow (AUS) dropped from runner-up to 3rd, given his relatively early (for him) exit in Brazil. Joel Parkinson (AUS) opted out of Brazil and his ranking fell from 3rd to 4th. CJ Hobgood (USA) took home a 9th in Brazil, moving him to number 5, while previous number 5, Adriano de Souza (BRA), was sidelined with an injury in Brazil and slipped to 6th in the rankings. Ace Buchan (AUS), Mick Fanning (AUS) and Bobby Martinez (USA) remained in 7th, 8th and 9th, respectively, following Brazil, where Ace faltered with a 33rd, while Bobby and Mick sat out with injuries. Rounding out the top 10 was Jeremy Flores, whose 2nd place finish in Brazil allowed him to leapfrog over Luke Stedman (AUS), whose 33rd in Brazil dropped him to number 12 in the rankings.
On the back end of the top 45, a few spots changed in the top 27 after Brazil. Moving in to the top 27 were Damien Hobgood (USA), who went from 30th to 27th, and Heitor Alves (BRA), who moves from 29th to 24th. Making a huge leap in the rankings was Fronchie, Miky Picon, whose 3rd place in Brazil saw him jump from 26th to 18th in the rankings. Falling out of the top 27 were Roy Powers, whose 17th in Brazil joins his string of 17ths to drop him from 24th to 28th in the rankings, and Dean Morrison (AUS), who, out on for a hip procedure, nearly lost his life in a boating wreck, and saw his ranking on the World Tour drop from 27th to 31st.
It will be interesting to keep an eye on numbers 23 through 32 in the rankings, as strong or weak finishes in Hawaii can see some drop from the safety of the top 27 and some requalify, given less than an 850 point spread between them. Hold your breath until December 8th, the kickoff day of the 2008 Billabong Pipeline Masters. Until then, turn your attention to the WQS, where the 4 Star Xcel Pro is running now through November 10th, then the 6 Star Prime Reef Hawaiian Pro, running November 12th through 23rd, and finally, the 6 Star Prime O’Neill World Cup, running November 24th to December 6th.
