The Billabong Pipeline Masters jumped right into a second day of action in this third day in the event waiting period. Wednesday saw the end of Round 2 and the completion of Round 3, with all of the top seeds having their way in the day’s heats.
Joel Parkinson took top honors of the day, with a perfect 20 out of 20 combined heat score in his heat against Hawaiian phenom and giant killer, Dusty Payne. With the swell direction favoring backdoor, we saw the surprise exit of some heavy weight goofyfooters who are known for their left hand barrel riding skills, including Damien Hobgood, CJ Hobgood, Fred Patacchia and Bobby Martinez.
Advancing to Round 4 were local Hawaiians, Marcus Hickman, Jamie O’Brien, Kamalei Alexander and Evan Valiere; and World Tour surfers, Kelly Slater (USA), Andy Irons (HAW), Bede Durbidge (AUS), Luke Stedman (AUS), Joel Parkinson (AUS), Tim Reyes (USA), Kieren Perrow (AUS), Aritz Aranburu (EUK), Ace Buchan (AUS), Adriano de Souza (BRA), Tom Whitaker (AUS) and Chris Ward (USA). Bowing out in Round 4 were Hawaiian boys, Shane Dorian, Dusty Payne, Kekoa Bacalso and Ezra Sitt; and World Tour surfers, Mick Fanning (AUS), Damien Hobgood (USA), Bruce Irons (HAW), Jeremy Flores (FRA), Bobby Martinez (USA), Taj Burrow (AUS), Dean Morrison (AUS), CJ Hobgood (USA), Kai Otton (AUS), Danny Wills (AUS), Taylor Knox (USA) and Fred Patacchia (HAW).
