Billabong Pro Maui - a few more lay days
The weekend has come and gone. We’ve seen the crowning of the Billabong Pipeline Masters champion (Kelly Slater) and the men’s Van’s Triple Crown of Surfing champion (Joel Parkinson), but the ladies are still laying in wait for the swell to pick up at Honolua Bay. Other points around Maui lit up on the swell that provided waves for Oahu’s North Shore, but Honolua Bay on Maui’s northwest point failed to produce, given its narrower swell window, thanks to neighboring Molokai to the North. With several days left in the event waiting period, and only a few hours needed to complete the event, we’re more than likely to see a finish sometime this week.
Since the men’s season has completely wrapped up, complete with selection of the 2009 World Tour top 45, all attention is now on the ladies. In the coming days, the final day of the Billabong Pro Maui will decide the Maui champion, the Van’s Triple Crown of Surfing champion, and the final 17 surfers for the 2009 Women’s World Tour.
When competition resumes, we’ll see the start of the Quarterfinals. The only surfers remaining in the event are 7 time World Champ, Layne Beachley (AUS); 2007 and 2008 World Champ, Stephanie Gilmore (AUS); queen killing Hawaiian supergrom, Carissa Moore; Rosanne Hodge (ZAF); Rebecca Woods (AUS); Melanie Bartels (HAW); Megan Abubo (HAW); and Silvana Lima (BRA).
