After two lay days, the Billabong Pro Maui finally kicked off on Wednesday on this third day in the event waiting period. The ladies dug in to the perfect overhead waves on tap for the first official day of competition, pushing through all of Rounds 1, 2 and 3.
Round 1 kicked off with 6 three contestant heats, with first and second place finishers advancing directly to Round 3, while third place finishers faced off in 2 three contestant heats in Round 2. First and second place finishers of Round 2 advanced to Round 3, where the girl on girl action took off.
Surviving to the Quarterfinals were Layne Beachley, Rosanne Hodge (ZAF), Rebecca Woods (AUS), Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), Carissa Moore (HAW), Melanie Bartels (HAW), Megan Abubo (HAW) and Silvana Lima (BRA). Bowing out in Round 3 were Nicola Atherton (AUS), Sam Cornish (AUS), Jacqueline Silva (BRA), Paige Hareb (NZL), Sofia Mulanovich (PER), Jessi Miley-Dyer (AUS), Amee Donohoe (AUS) and Karina Petroni (USA).
